In honor of Ada Lovelace day, I am reading Princess at the Keyboard with my ten year old daughter. Like any girl child firmly raised in the Disney tradition, the word "princess" in the title convinced her the book was made for her. The thirteen year old girl on the cover holding a laptop sealed the deal.
She doesn't know that women are a minority in the technology fields. In her world Mommy is a computer wizard and can make a computer do anything. Her Barbie laptop computer looks just like Mommy's pink laptop, and when she grows up she will carry one, too.
It may seem silly that little things like a word in the title, or the color of a computer means so much. The message to her, though, is clear - she belongs to this world of princesses and technology.
